Dear Parents/Carers,
Last week the children enjoyed all the activities that they completed during Maths Week. The children were very keen to solve the clues to the mystery quiz, some of the questions were quite tricky but the children were determined to find the answers and unlock the padlock. Once they found the code number and unlocked the padlock they then found the ‘365 Penguins’ book and a soft penguin teddy. Children learnt about triangular numbers, that a number can be shown using a pattern of dots (penguins) in an equilateral triangle. Children participated in ‘Scrabble Maths’ where they had to find words that can make the score exactly 15 points. The highlight of the week was when the children participated in the ‘Strictly Come Penguin Dancing’ competition, children danced with great enthusiasm and the judges were very impressed with Year 5’s dance moves.
Our Year 5s were excellent role models at our KS1 Sports Day, where they supported the younger children. They were enthusiastic and encouraging, ensuring that everyone enjoyed themselves. We are really proud of them.
Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to accompany us to the Royal College of Music on Monday and to Finchley Catholic High School on Wednesday. We only have one parent who has volunteered to come with 5G to the Barnet Environment Centre on Thursday, if we do not get another two parents the trip will be cancelled which will be a great shame for the children as they have been looking forward to this trip.

This week
Literacy: We will plan our newspaper articles about the moon landing this week, thinking about how to order the information, keep the reader engaged, and plan quotes from different people involved.
Maths: This week we started a new unit on shape, in particular angles. We are looking at different types of angles, e.g. right angle, acute angle, obtuse angle, reflex angle.
Guided Reading: Thank you to those who have already bought our Guided Reading text, ‘Cosmic’ by Frank Cottrell Boyce. The links to buy this book are below. We carried out a class debate, discussing the main character. We had to use the text as evidence to support our opinions.
