On Tuesday, Mr Reilly, Mrs Whatley, Miss Kelly and Mrs Limerick accompanied 35 KS2 children to Saracens’ home ground, Stone X Stadium, to compete against 15 other Barnet medium and large primary schools. The children tried out for a range of track and field events during their PE lessons and have shown commitment to this event by attending additional training sessions after school at The Totteridge Academy.
The day began with the field events where all of the children competed with enthusiasm and were cheered along by their peers from the stands. All the children were particularly determined to earn as many points for St Catherine’s as possible, to the extent that a year 6 child stepped in at the last minute to compete in high jump, for which he had had no training, and managed to come third!
After lunch, the track events got underway and we had lots of highlights during the afternoon with many of our runners coming in 2nd or 3rd place. But we particularly shone during the relays where our Year 3 mixed relay team and Y5 Boys relay team were awarded first place! The rest of the relay teams did exceptional well finishing in either 2nd, 3rd or 4th place!
Following a parade of the track, where St Catherine’s certainly wanted to let everyone know that they were there, we waited eagerly for the results. St Catherine’s just missed out on two pieces of silverware by coming 2nd in the track events (5 points behind the winners) and 2nd overall by one point! We didn’t didn’t let this tarnish our day as all of the children did their best in their event despite the competitive atmosphere and contributed to a total of 278 points.
The children did both the school and their families proud, they showed great sportsmanship to not only St Catherine’s children, but to other schools too.
Thank you to all of the relatives that came and supported St Catherine’s, it was lovely to see you all there.
