Next Week is London Maths Week!

Next week, we will be celebrating ‘Maths week London.’ Maths week will be about building children’s confidence, nurturing a love of maths and sparking an interest in a subject that impacts all of our lives, every day, and beyond the classroom. This year, we want to highlight why maths is important to engage with from a young age to help develop practical skills. We want to show how making maths relevant can also make it fun and how it can enable success in all areas of everyday life.

At St Catherine’s the whole school will be focusing on the story ‘365 Penguins’ by Jean-Luc Fromental. Each year group will be working on a Mathematical concept from this story.

TT Rockstars Tournament

As part of our commitment to make maths exciting and high profile in our school, Year 2 and all of the Key Stage 2 children will take part in a friendly TT Rockstars competition involving schools in the United Kingdom. It’s a three-day competition which starts on Monday 26th June at 7:30am and ends on Wednesday 28th June at 7:30pm.  Children can play in any gamemode with every correct answer to a multiplication or division question, earning themselves, their class and the school a point.

To support player well-being, there is a daily time limit of 60-minutes per player. Once the player goes beyond 60 minutes of play on that day, they will still earn coins but will no longer earn points towards the competition.

Children will be given the opportunity to participate in the tournament once during those three days at school and then if possible, we would like the children to participate at home too.

Penguin Day

To end Maths Week, we would like all children to wear black and white or a penguin costume on Thursday 29th June. For children in KS1, they will get changed after their Sports day. Please make sure they have their clothes in their bag.

Maths Art competition

We would like children to participate in a Maths/Art competition linking to our story of ‘365 Penguins’. All entries to be submitted by Monday 10th July and can be created on A4 or A3 – no bigger please. There will be a winner in each phase, i.e. one winner in EYFS, one winner in KS1, one winner in LKS2 and one winner in UKS2. Please see some suggested ideas below.

EYFS – Children to design their own Mathematical penguin, with an emphasis on numbers and/or shapes

KS1 – Children to design their own Mathematical penguin, with an emphasis on calculations (+, -, x, ÷)

KS2 – Children to design a new front cover for the book and explain some of the maths concepts that they have learnt from the story.

We are all looking forward to participating in lots of Maths activities next week!
