Year 1 Weekly Update – 18th March 2023

Dear Parents and Carers,

Please find our weekly update below. Please take the time to review the list of reminders at the bottom of this email. If you have any questions, please speak to your class teacher.

Phonics: This week in phonics we have reviewing our learning from last week.

What can I do at home?

Read with your child at least 10 minutes per day. Sound out words on fingers or out loud. Children should identify digraphs and trigraphs they can see first. Children can chunk the word (splitting the word into chunks to decode). For example: feel/ling.

Please continue to practise recalling and writing the tricky words from this week and last term. I have attached the Phonics Home learning from last week in this email also.

Maths: In Maths this week we have continued with place value of numbers within 20. We have been solving missing number problems using addition and subtractions. We have also been completing fact families using part-part wholes and bar models.

What can I do at home?

Visit Purple Mash for learning that has been set for week. If your child would like to complete more maths work, we would advise that you print out the Purple Mash page and complete the learning on paper. This will minimise their screen time and to allow them to write numbers and practise their screen time.

Literacy: This week in Literacy we have introduced our new book, Beegu. We have been discussed how we could describe Beegu’s character using adjectives and we have been writing simple sentences using descriptive language.

Handwriting: This week the children have been correctly forming the letter ‘k’.

Science: As it is Science week, we have been incorporating as much science learning into our day as possible. On Monday, we were visited by Dog’s Trust, who gave us information on how to be safe around dogs, and how we can keep dogs safe. On Tuesday, we visited the Science Museum and took part in a Space workshop. We also visited the Pattern Pod where children could recognise and copy patterns, or create new ones!

Reminders:

– Please could you continue to bring in your child’s reading record everyday so we can record when we read with your child and write the change of their book.

Home school books and library books are to be returned on a Wednesday.

We hope you have a lovely weekend!

Best wishes,

Miss. Kyriacou, Mr. Noel and Mrs. Byrne
