Year 5 Weekly Update – 09/02/23

Dear Parents,

This Week’s Learning:

This week we have celebrated Mental Health Week and Safer Internet Day (Tuesday). The theme this year for Mental Health Week is ‘Let’s Connect’, the children discussed how they are connected, they did this by finding out things they have in common and how this can connect them together. We also thought about positive things about each other, the children enjoyed completing this activity. For ‘Safer Internet Day’ we watched and discussed a video about how to stay safe online and what to do if something happens that worries us online. We completed a couple of tasks on who are our trusted adults are in and outside of school, we also discussed risks we might face online and strategies to keep us safe.

In English, the children have written a non-chronological report about an elf, pixie or sprite that they created. The skills we focused on were: sub-headings, relative clauses, interesting sentences openers and technical language. The children have really enjoyed this writing unit and we will be displaying this work in the classroom after half term.

In Maths, we have been using formal method to multiply a four digit by a two digit number (3427 x 15). We have been applying the skills we have learned to solve multiplication word problems.

In Design and Technology, we have been designing and making a board game based on Alchemy Island. Thank you very much for sending in cardboard, card and extra things that have helped them produce their game. The children worked well collaboratively in groups by allocating roles to each person within the group.
