Year 5 Weekly Update – 23/09/22

Dear Parents,

After another successful and busy week in Year 5, we would like to let you know what we have done this week.

In English, we have written our magazine articles about the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

In Maths, we have been comparing and ordering numbers to 1,000,000. We have been placing numbers on a number line.

In Guided Reading: we have read non-fiction texts and used our retrieval skills to answer comprehension questions.

In PHSE, we have looked at God’s call to Zacchaeus and how he changed his ways after meeting Jesus.

Next week:

In English, we will be publishing our magazine articles, with a focus on how to make our layout appealing to a reader. We will then start our new unit on mystery stories.

In Maths, we will continue our Place Value topic.

In Guided Reading, we will start reading ‘The Time-Travelling Cat and the Egyptian Goddess’ by Julia Jarman.

In PSHE, we will be learning about how pressure come in different forms and strategies to resist it.

In RE, we will be learning how to be healthy: physically and spiritually.

Times Table Rock Stars

Please continue to encourage your child to use Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) at home. We have set up a tournament on TTRS, children can take part from Friday 23d September, 5pm until Sunday 25th September 5pm. The tournament is 5MG vs 5G, the more your child uses TTRS the more coins they will earn for their class. May the best class win!

Reading

Children need to read at least five times weekly for twenty minutes. Children in Year 5 still really benefit from being read to and having discussions about the books they are reading.

Next Week:

PE: Wednesday and Thursday

Forest school:  5MG- Tuesday    5G- Wednesday

27th September 9am – Year 5 class mass. If your child has been asked to speak can you please help them practise reading loudly and clearly. We hope to see you there.

Have a lovely weekend,

The year 5 team
