Discord is a popular voice and text chat tool that allows players to talk to each other in real time while they play games. Whilst it is extremely popular and an excellent tool if in the right hands, the app is aimed primarily at adults and does pose some potential risks for children. Using Discord, you can add friends using a code from an email invite but you can also find users near you (strangers) if location settings are turned on. Users can also join a Stage channel where up to 1,000 users are listening to (and sometimes participating in) a live audio broadcast which in the past have been found to contain extreme political views or share explicit content. Although Discord does apply settings which can prevent abusive language harmful content can still come through. It is therefore recommended that primary aged children do not use the app at all.
