Online Safety – 11/12/24 –  Smartphone Free Childhood

As Christmas approaches, some parents may be contemplating the purchase of a smartphone for their child. It is therefore an important time to remind you of the Smartphone Free Childhood initiative. While the allure of a smartphone can be tempting, we urge families to reflect on the potential negative impacts associated with smartphone use, particularly in young children. At St Catherine’s we support the Smartphone Free Childhood initiative and we encourage you to think critically about how devices affect your child’s development and well-being. Studies have shown that excessive screen time can lead to issues such as diminished concentration, disrupted sleep patterns, and even anxiety.

Before making a decision, we recommend considering alternative presents that promote face-to-face interactions, imaginative play, and outdoor activities, which are vital for a child’s social and emotional growth. If a phone is deemed necessary, consider options that do not have access to the internet. You can find a list of smartphone alternatives here:

Thank you for your ongoing support in creating a safe and nurturing environment for our children.
