Year 1 Weekly Update – 25th March 2023

Dear Parents and Carers,

Please find our weekly update below. Please take the time to review the list of reminders at the bottom of this email. If you have any questions, please speak to your class teacher.

Phonics: This week in Phonics, we have been learning these new graphemes:

  • /ear/ in learn,
  • /wr/ in wrist,
  • /st/ in listen and /sc/ in scent,

/ar/ in collar, /our/ in flavour and /or/ in actor.

We have been reviewing these tricky words:

  • Many,
  • Any,
  • Friend,
  • Through
  • Two,
  • Your.

What can I do at home?

Read with your child at least 10 minutes per day. Sound out words on fingers or out loud. Children should identify digraphs and trigraphs they can see first. Children can chunk the word (splitting the word into chunks to decode). For example: feel/ling.

Please continue to practise recalling and writing the tricky words from this week and last term. I have attached the Phonics Home learning from last week in this email also.

Maths: In Maths this week we have been learning about place value within 50. This has involved counting forwards and backwards from a given number within 50. We have also been exploring tens and ones within a given number.

What can I do at home?

Visit Purple Mash for learning that has been set for week. If your child would like to complete more maths work, we would advise that you print out the Purple Mash page and complete the learning on paper. This will minimise their screen time and to allow them to write numbers and practise their screen time.

Literacy: This week in Literacy we have been using our knowledge of the alien, Beegu, to create our own aliens. We have created and written our own alien names as well as adjectives to describe our alien. We have also drawn our alien in our books.

Handwriting: This week the children have been correctly forming the letter ‘k’ and ‘t’.

RE: This week in RE, we have been learning about Martha and Mary, who were friends of Jesus. The children showed their understanding of the story through role play, and reflected the message of the story into their own lives.

Art: This week in Art, the children have been painting their cereal boxes that had been brought in. Thereafter, they used materials to decorate their boxes to make a spaceship.

Design and Technology: In DT this week, the children have been using small boxes to recreate a space buggy using wheels and string.

Reminders:

  • Please could you continue to bring in your child’s reading record everyday so we can record when we read with your child and write the change of their book.

Home school books and library books are to be returned on a Wednesday.

  • A polite reminder that next Friday (31st March 2023), the school is closing at 1:30pm.

We hope you have a lovely weekend!

Best wishes,

Miss. Kyriacou, Mr. Noel and Mrs. Byrne
