What is the Jubilee Year 2025?

Pope Francis has decided that 2025 will be a year of Jubilee, something which happens every 25 years.

The theme is “Pilgrims of Hope”, and it will be a year of hope for a world suffering the impacts of war, the ongoing effects of COVID-19 pandemic, and a climate crisis.

Preparation for the 2025 Year of Jubilee began in Advent 2023, which was the start of a Year of Prayer.

The Jubilee Year began in December 2024 with Pope Francis opening the “Holy Door” in St. Peter’s Basilica, offering the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics the possibility of obtaining a plenary indulgence and a year of special graces. The Jubilee of Hope will end on the feast of the Epiphany in 2026.

As His Holiness Pope Francis so beautifully expressed it:

“We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us, and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision.”

What is a Jubilee?
