One particularly concerning app that is currently being used amongst some children is the Secret Calculator app, deceptively disguised as a standard calculator but serving a much darker purpose. Designed for ages three and above, this app allows users to conceal private photos, videos, and files, effectively creating a secret vault that is hidden from plain sight. Children may be drawn to this app due to its innocuous appearance and the thrill of having a ‘secret’ space on their devices. However, it poses significant risks. The hidden content can only be accessed by entering a numeric PIN, creating a barrier that can obscure inappropriate or harmful material from parental oversight. Furthermore, the app features an option to take a “selfie” of anyone attempting to access it incorrectly, adding an element of deception. There is also a “fake vault” feature, allowing users to store misleading content while concealing the more dangerous files. Given these alarming functionalities, we strongly advise parents to prohibit this app and engage in open discussions about online safety, ensuring our children are well-equipped to navigate the digital landscape responsibly.
