Online Safety – 15/01/25 –  TOR

This week, we would like to bring your attention to TOR (The Onion Router), a software that allows users to browse the internet anonymously. While it is designed with the intention of enhancing online privacy, TOR also acts as a gateway to the dark web, a part of the internet infamous for its illicit activities. Children may be tempted to use TOR to evade restrictions or explore forbidden content; however, this poses significant dangers.

The dark web is notoriously unregulated, harbouring illegal activities such as drug trafficking, weapon sales, and hacking services. Engaging with these sites can lead not only to legal repercussions but also to exposure to harmful content, including malware and scams that threaten personal data. Disturbingly, the anonymity provided by TOR can facilitate predatory behaviour, with some individuals seeking to exploit vulnerable young users.

We strongly advise parents to discuss the potential risks associated with TOR and monitor their children’s online activities. Awareness and communication are key to ensuring a safer online environment for our young learners.
