Year 5 Weekly Update – 10/03/23

Dear Parents,

Key Dates:

13th -17th March- Science Week

In English, we have finished our non-chronological reports about allotments. We have edited and improved our writing, making sure we have used the steps to success, such as, using a variety of sentence openers, technical language, sub-headings and relative clauses to add extra information.

In Maths, we have been learning how to multiply fractions by an integer. In guided work, we have been learning to explain how we can work out a reason and problem solving question. The children have worked hard to use different sentence starters and mathematical vocabulary.

In RE, we have been learning to understand what a sin is and how they can affect our relationships. The children were then given the opportunity to respond to a personal problem by writing a letter, giving advice about how to resolve the sin.

In Geography and Computing the children learned about food miles. They looked at the ingredients for popular dishes, e.g. Spaghetti Bolognaise and found the total of food miles for the meal. The children used the following website and they may want to use it at home:

https://www.foodmiles.com

Next week is Science Week, the theme is ‘Connections’. The children will be taking part in a range of activities and workshops. For one of the activities the children will be creating bridges, in order to make the bridges we need masking tape. If you could donate masking tape for the activity we would be very grateful. This week the Science Ambassadors have informed the children about a Science poster competition. They can create a poster (on A3 or A4 paper) about any connection they like. The winners will receive a prize. The deadline is Friday 17th March.
