Year 5 Weekly Update – 09/09/22

Dear Parents,

We have had an amazing start to Year 5 and have been impressed with how quickly the children have settled into their class. They have been so enthusiastic and have enjoyed starting our new ‘Pharaoh’ topic with a History lesson where they had the opportunity to look at different replica artefacts.

It was lovely to see so many of you at the curriculum meeting. The slides from the meeting our attached.

We started our week by creating a class charter. We thought about the rights we have at school and then discussed what responsibilities we have in order to make sure these rights are upheld.

In English, we have started to look at the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter. We have discussed the difference between open and closed questions. We have used this to write interesting open questions that we would like to ask Howard Carter.

In Maths, we have started our unit on Place Value and will continue this next week.

In Guided Reading, we have been using our inference skills to infer information from a picture and started to revise our retrieval skills.

In RE, we started our ‘Creation’ topic. For our RE display the children created a leaf with a target that they would like to achieve this year and strategies to help them achieve that target.

In Geography, we used google maps and atlases to locate Egypt and to identify different physical features, such as, the River Nile and Cairo.

Next week:

In English, we will be looking at the features of non-chronological reports (magazine article). We will continue to research the events surrounding Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.

In RE, we will continue our Creation topic.

In Guided Reading, we will be reading non-fiction texts and continue to use our retrieval skills and thinking about vocabulary choices.

In Spelling lessons we will be looking at words with ‘ough’ ending. A spelling list will be sent in next week’s email.

Support at home

Spellings will be sent (via the weekly email) to practise at home from next Friday 16th September. The first spelling test will be on 23rd September.

Times Table Rock Stars

Please continue to encourage your child to use Times Table Rock Stars at home everyday for ten minutes. If they need their username and password, please encourage them to ask their teacher for it.

Reading

Children need to read at least five time a week for twenty minutes each time. Children in Year 5 still really benefit from being read to and having discussions about the books they are reading.

Next Week Only-

5MG will have PE on Tuesday (indoor) and Thursday (Outside).

Forest School 5G- Tuesday 5MG- Wednesday.

Please make sure children have waterproofs and wellington boots for these days.

Have a lovely weekend,

The year 5 team
