The minimum age for a TikTok user is 13 years old however, TikTok doesn’t use any age verification tools when new users sign up and it is evident that there are many younger users. It is important to note that while children may only be looking for child friendly content, they could still come across harmful content making it a risk. TikTok does offer some parental controls such as “Family Pairing” where parents can link their child’s account to their own and control direct messages, set screen time limits, and turn restricted content off directly from their device. Using this, parents also receive a notification if any settings are changed from their child’s device. While this may help, there is still a risk of harmful content being seen so advice is always to avoid using these apps until the appropriate age.
