Year 5 Weekly Update – 29/4/22

Dear Parents,

We have had a great week in year 5, with the highlight being our trip to Westminster Abbey. The children were so well behaved and were really proud of them.

In English, we have been looking at what makes a good biography, building our topic vocabulary and using interesting sentence starters which we will then use in our Henry VIII biographies next week.

In Maths, we have been learning to understand how fractions can be written as decimals and to understand the place value of digits in a number up to 3 decimal places.

In Guided Reading, we have started to read ‘The Diver’s Daughter’ by Patrice Lawrence. We will continue to read this book next week and use the reading VIPERS to develop our reading skills. Attached is a VIPERS reading document with examples of the sorts of questions you could be asking when reading with your child.

Next week:

In English, we will be writing our Henry VIII biographies.

In Maths, we will be rounding, comparing and ordering decimals and learning to understand percentages

In History, we will be taking part in a virtual workshop with the National Archive. Children will have a chance to study different sources about Henry VIII and interpret what they tell us about him.

Support at home

Spellings this week are homophones. Please find attached the spellings in sentences. When your child is tested on 6th May we will read out sentences so we know they understand the meaning of the homophone.
