Dear Parents,
This week has been an exciting week for the children in year 5. They have had the opportunity to take part in live lessons on topic, such as, climate change and fun-filled workshops on, the stars and constellations, states of matter and pollution.
This week:
In English, the children have enjoyed being introduced to ‘The Secret Garden’. They have used the description of the garden to magpie: good sentences, vocabulary and figurative language.
In Maths, we have continued with fractions, learning how to subtract mixed numbers.
In Geography, we used mapping software to identify allotments and worked out their area.
Next week:
In English, we will be broadening our vocabulary and creating our own secret gardens, which we will then write a description for.
In Maths, we will move onto multiplying fractions.
In PSHE, we will be looking at how to treat people with basic first aid in a medical emergency. We will learn how to place somebody in the recovery position and how to assess a situation and a person’s needs, using DR ABC. We will also be looking at what kind of physical contact is acceptable or unacceptable and how to respond. We will also be discuss that there are different people we can trust for help.
In Art, we will be looking at the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo and producing work inspired by him.

Times Table Rock Stars
There is currently a competition between year 5 and year 6 on Times Table Rock Stars please encourage your child to access it at home so year 5 are providing year 6 with more competition. Please see this weeks newsletter for the results.
Reading
Children need to read at least 5 times weekly for 20 minutes. Even in year 5, when your child may be a ‘free reader’, it is still valuable to listen to them read and to read to them.
Dates for your diary:
Tuesday 28th June- KS2 Sports Day
Have a lovely weekend,
The year 5 team
