Dear Parents,
We hope you had a restful half term. The children have really enjoyed the start of their new topic ‘allotments’. The week started with planting sweet peas and yesterday we had a fascinating talk from Mrs Ainger, who has owned an allotment for 35 years.
In Maths, we have continued our fraction topic and have been looking at adding and subtracting fractions.
In English, we have been researching about allotments using the new laptops and by asking Mrs Ainger questions.
In Science, we looked at germination.
The children have really enjoyed taking part in an Indonesian Gamelan workshop. They have created beautiful puppets, listened to a traditional story and had a chance to listen and play the instruments.
Next week, we will also be continuing our Gamelan workshops and practising for a performance on Thursday. We would like to invite one member from each family to watch the performance at 1:45pm in the hall.
Next week, in English we will start to write a report about allotments, focussing on using relative clauses to add more information.
In Maths, we will continue our fractions topic.
In PSHE, we will be learning about the effect that a range of substances including drugs, tobacco and alcohol can have on the body. We will be learning how to make good choices about substances that will have a positive impact on our health.
We would like to create an allotment display in our classrooms, if you have any photos of visits to allotments or growing vegetables or fruit at home it would be great if you could send them in.

Spellings
This week the spellings are words with very unusual GPCs (grapheme phoneme correspondence). This can make the word difficult to spell so in class we looked at techniques, such as, oral segmenting a word and looking at the difficult graphemes in that word.
Spellings for the spelling test on Friday 4th March:
bruise,
guarantee,
immediately,
vehicle,
yacht
languages
Straight
rhyme
rhythm
queue
Reading
Children need to read at least 5 times weekly for 20 minutes. Even in year 5, when your child may be a ‘free reader’, it is still valuable to listen to them read and to read to them.
Times Table Rock Stars
Your child should now have their login details to access Times Table Rock Stars at home, this should be a fun way for your child to practise their multiplication tables.
Dates for your diary:
Wednesday 2nd March – The Lion King Trip. Please send your child with a snack and a water bottle in a disposable bag.
Thursday 3rd March – World Book Day- bring in a potato made into a book character (more information in the newsletter)
Gamelan performance – 1:45pm in the hall
Tuesday 28th June – KS2 Sports Day
We hope you have a lovely weekend,
The year 5 team
