TikTok has quickly become one of the world’s most downloaded apps and from discussions throughout the school on Safer Internet Day, it is evident that TikTok is used by many children. TikTok is a free social media app that lets you create, share, and watch short clips. TikTok advises a minimum age of 13 to access the platform, however, if children choose an older date of birth, they can easily access it at a younger age. As well as this, you don’t actually need an account to see the content, only to post new content. Users can re-create content from dance challenges to memes about current events. While many are harmless and fun, there are others that need to be monitored closely as the content can be upsetting which is why the age restriction is in place. As always, continue to have conversations with your child about what they are doing online and how it is making them feel.
