Year 5 Weekly Update – 28/01/22

Dear Parents,

This week we are really looking forward to the visit from the Cardinal on Thursday and seeing the new Arts hub on Friday. Please remember that children are invited to wear blue and yellow to school on Friday to celebrate this special occasion.

This week:

In maths, we will be starting our topic on ‘Fractions’.

In English, we will be writing our non-chronological reports about our ‘factional’ sprite, pixie, elf or fairy that we created last week.

In PSHE, we are learning how to assess the reliability of sources of information online; and how to make safe, reliable choices from search results.

Spellings for the spelling test (Friday 4th February)

This week all the spellings are homophones:

Lead/led

Steel/ steal

Passed/past

Alter/altar

Aloud/allowed

Your child will need to know the different meanings of each homophone for the test. Last week we worked on this in class. Please find attached example sentences for these homophones

Reading

Children need to read at least 5 times weekly for 20 minutes. Even in year 5, when your child may be a ‘free reader’, it is still valuable to listen to them read and to read to them.

Please continue to practise multiplication tables with your child so they have quick recall up to 12 x 12. There are still games on Purple Mash that your child can access to practise their times tables.

Dates for your diary:

Friday 4th February- Children to come to school in blue and yellow to celebrate the opening of our new Arts Hub.

Friday 4th February- 8:30-10am Coffee Morning in our new Arts Hub.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The year 5 team
