Year 5 Weekly Update – 04/02/22

Dear Parents,

This week, the children really enjoyed visiting the new Arts Hub where they were entertained by a magician and had a snack. The children will go home with a special bookmark today to commemorate its opening.

In Maths, we have started our fractions topic, we have been finding equivalent fractions and fractions that are greater than 1.

In English, we have completed our non-chronological reports about the elf, sprite, pixie or fairy we created. We have also peer assessed them against the steps to success.

In Science, we have been investigating reversible and irreversible changes.

In Design and Technology, we have designed and started creating our Alchemy Island board games in groups.

Next week:

In maths, we will continue to look a fractions. To support your child try and show them where fractions are used in real life. A great way is with food e.g. Can you cut the pizza into sixths? I had 2 thirds of a chocolate bar you had 2 sixths of it- who had more chocolate?

In English, we will be looking at ‘The tempest’ By William Shakespeare. We will be focussing on Prospero’s soliloquy at the end of the play. We will then be writing our own soliloquy as the Alchemist.

In PSHE, we will be taking part in an online session for ‘Safer Internet Day’. We will also be looking at Mental Wellbeing.

In Design and Technology, we will continue to create our board games in groups

Reading

Children need to read at least 5 times weekly for 20 minutes. Even in year 5, when your child may be a ‘free reader’, it is still valuable to listen to them read and to read to them.

Please continue to practise multiplication tables with your child so they have quick recall up to 12 x 12. There are still games on Purple Mash that your child can access to practise their times tables.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The year 5 team
