Year 5 Weekly Update – 21/01/22

Dear Parents,

It was lovely to see so many of you at the Year 5 Mass on Tuesday. We are so proud of how the children spoke and behaved during the service.

In Maths, we have continued to multiply up to 4 digits by 2 digits (e.g. 2845 x 32)

In English, we written a fantasy setting description and we created our own fantasy character. One of our sentence focuses this week was to use relative embedded clauses in our writing.

In Science, we investigated whether materials could be separated.

In Geography, we have been learning how to find places of interest on a map using a 4 and 6 grid reference.

In computing, we have used mixed media to create our own portal and avatar.

Next week:

In maths, we will be learning methods to divide numbers.

In English, we will beginning to look at non-chronological reports.

In PSHE, we will continue to look at cyberbullying and examples of it.

In Science, we will be looking at dissolving.

In Design and Technology, we will be designing an Alchemy Island board game. In preparation for this it would be great if your child could make a list of their favourite board game and the reasons why they like that game.

For Design and Technology, please continue to send in any junk modelling you have at home e.g. old cereal boxes, kitchen roll tubes, egg boxes etc.

Spellings for the spelling test (Friday 28th January)

This week all the spellings have an –ibly or –ably ending.

horribly

terribly

possibly

legibly

enjoyably

incredibly

agreeably

respectably

valuably

adorably

Reading

Children need to read at least 5 times weekly for 20 minutes. Even in year 5, when your child may be a ‘free reader’, it is still valuable to listen to them read and to read to them.

Multiplication Tables

Please multiplication tables with your child so they have quick recall up to 12 x 12. This is really important to support them when completing long multiplication (24 x 17) and our next topic of fractions. There are still games on Purple Mash that your child can access to practise their times tables.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The year 5 team
