Year 5 Weekly Update – 14/01/22

Dear Parents,

This week in year 5, we have enjoyed another week on ‘Alchemy Island’.

In maths, we have been multiplying up to 4 digits by 1 digit and 2 digits by 2 digits.

In English, we have planned and written an opening to a fantasy story. We have been learning how to use a variety of sentence types to improve our description.

In PSHE, we discussed different scenarios and thought about whether they were examples of people sharing online safely or not.

In Geography, we looked at the purpose of contour lines on Ordnance Survey maps. Next week, we will add contour lines to the map of Alchemy Island, to show clearly where different physical features are, such as, the mountain range.

Next week:

In maths, we will continue our ‘Multiplication and Division’ topic.

In English, we will be continuing to look at fantasy stories. We will be writing a fantasy setting description and we will create our own fantasy character.

In PSHE, we will be looking at what the term cyberbullying means and examples of it.

For Design and Technology, could you please send in any junk modelling you have at home e.g. old cereal boxes, kitchen roll tubes, egg boxes etc.

Mass Tuesday 18th January 9am

We are looking forward to seeing many of you on Tuesday morning for Year 5’s Mass. We kindly ask that only one member from each household attends.

Spellings for the spelling test (Friday 21st January)

This week all the spellings were created using a word matrix:

digitally

construction

instruction

quadrilateral

intercept

deceptive

developed

envelop

Children need to read at least 5 times weekly for 20 minutes. Even in year 5, when your child may be a ‘free reader’, it is still valuable to listen to them read and to read to them.

Please continue to practise multiplication tables with your child so they have quick recall up to 12 x 12. This is really important to support them when completing long multiplication (24 x 17) and for our next topic of fractions. There are still games on Purple Mash that your child can access to practise their times tables.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The year 5 team
