Year 3 Weekly Update – 27/11/20

Dear parents/carers,

This week in year 3 in our literacy/topic we have begun to read the story of the Stone Age Boy and to discuss the text. The children have been writing speech for the characters in the story and will later on be learning about using speech marks to punctuate their direct speech.

Maths: Following on from our learning last week, the children will move onto adding multiples of 10, to a 3-digit number with an exchange. They will be shown that when adding tens, it can change the tens and hundreds column. The children will be encouraged to count in tens rather than use column addition. The children’s knowledge of inverse will be drawn upon to work out missing problems. Later in the week the children will be introduced to subtracting multiples of 10 from a 3-digit number with an exchange. The examples will show different ways the concept can be worked out, e.g. number lines and part-whole models. Counting backwards in tens or using 100 will be used to help support mental strategies.

RE: The children will have the opportunity to read The Visitation Scripture (Lk 1:39-45) and reflect on what it is like to hear good news and share it.  In the story, Mary wants to see if she can help Elizabeth, we will discuss what it is like when someone offers to help us and the importance of offering to help rather than waiting to be asked.

Art: The children have been creating winter art pictures and learning to blend colours for effect in a background and create silhouettes using paint.

For home learning this week please continue to learn the 4 times table. In spellings we have been looking at adding the suffixes ‘er’, ‘est’ and ‘ness’. Please help your child to learn the following words:

kindness

sadness

fairness

happy

happier

happiest

brave

braver

bravest

Please also make sure to listen to your child read and sign their reading record.

Thank you for your support.
