Year 5 Weekly Update

This week we:

Finished our non-chronological reports about gold, and they truly are worth their word count in gold! The children worked hard to use relative clauses, as well as all the correct features of a non-chronological report.

Continued to work with fractions in maths, by creating pairs of equivalent fractions, converting mixed numbers to improper fractions (and vice versa) and ordering fractions with different denominators.

Conducted an experiment to test which sugar would dissolve the fastest out of icing sugar, granulated sugar and caster sugar. The children explored what it means to conduct a fair test and timed it using ipads.

Our spellings focus has been homophones again. We have revised previous learning on homophones and introduced the children to some more, much more usual ones. The words to learn at home this week are:

Steel, steal

Alter, altar

led, lead

bridal, bridle

assent, ascent

Revision of their, they’re and there

The children will be assessed next week on the correct application of the spellings within a context. We have attached a spelling support sheet to help the children to practise the use of they’re, there and their. Ask your child to show you the clever ways of remembering the correct spellings earlier this week!

Wishing you all a fantastic weekend. Please remember to send in permission for our trip by Friday next week at the latest.
