Jubilee of Mercy – Follow in His Footsteps 2016 CCS Lenten Appeal

During Lent your child will be taking part in the Catholic Children’s Society Appeal. As this year is a special Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Diocese is encouraging all children to respond to Pope Francis’ call to show mercy to others. ‘Follow in His Footsteps’ asks all children to follow Jesus’ example by exploring how he showed mercy, love and kindness to others. Please encourage you child/children to fundraise as best they can. The money raised will support CCS services in schools.

Our lenten journey began on Wednesday. All of the KS2 children visited either St Peter’s or St Gregory’s for a short service during which they received ashes from either Father John or Father James. Father Oliver and Father James visited the KS1 and EYFS children after lunch and distributed ashes.

Ash Wednesday is one of the most important holy days in the liturgical calendar. Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. As our priests placed the ashes they said “Repent and believe in the Gospel.”

Thank you to the parents who walked with us to and from the churches and joined us in starting our journey through Lent.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

Over the last two weeks many of the children have designed their own ‘Door of Mercy’ and written their own prayers. The Prayer Service led by 6D gave the KS2 children a greater understanding of the meaning of ‘Mercy’.

Our Door of Mercy

Pope Francis has called all schools to create their own ‘Door of Mercy’. A special   ‘Thank You’ to Mrs Lown and Mr Lyons who came into school, before the children returned after the holidays, to prepareour special door. The children decided before the holiday where they wanted this to be the door leading into the main hall. They chose this as this is the door where the children, staff and parents enter when we gather for assemblies, masses and prayer services. It is a special door.

The children were delighted with the door. Our journey through the ‘Year of Mercy’ has begun! Mrs Lown also made a beautiful banner and an altar cloth. Thank You!
